Printing and Cursive Workshop

Our comprehensive, easy-to-use curriculum uses engaging multi-sensory techniques and research-based methods to make handwriting an natural and automatic skill for children of all ages and abilities. We use a fun hands-on approach to develop good skills and teach correct letter formation. The Handwriting Without Tears® Printing & Cursive workshop provides dynamic instruction in the teaching methodology from kindergarten through cursive.

Printing and Cursive Workshop Objectives

At the end of the HWT Printing and Cursive Workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the components of the handwriting process
  • Plan new activities to develop fine motor skills and posture for writing
  • Understand the developmental sequence involved in handwriting
  • Plan handwriting instruction using multisensory techniques
  • Identify appropriate transition time from printing to cursive
  • Identify common handwriting problem

9:00 a.m. Readiness: Size, Shape and Position Concepts, Directionality, Building Capital Letters, Language for Letters, Forming Good Habits
10:00 a.m. Getting Started: Posture, Paper & Pencil Skills, Grasping Grip, Looking out for Lefties, Unique Workbook Features
10:30 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m. Multisensory Activities: Music and Movement, Wet-Dry-Try, Door Tracing, Imaginary Writing, Letter Sizes and Places, Mystery Letters
11:15 a.m. Printing Capitals and Numbers: Teaching Strategies, Learn and Check, Preventing or Correcting Reversals, Looking out for Lefties, Grasping Grip
12:00 p.m. Lunch on Your Own
1:00 p.m. Printing Lowercase Letters: Teaching Method and Sequence, Promoting Neatness, Size Considerations, Word and Sentence Skills, Line Generalization, Teaching Guidelines
2:30 p.m. Break: Snack and beverage
2:45 p.m. Cursive Writing: Cursive Style, Scope and Sequence, Workbook Designs, Understanding Connections, Multisensory lessons, Building Fluency with Review and Mastery, Intervention Strategies
